  • DharmaGaia · Discusses all aspects of the relationship between spiritual practice and environmental awareness and responsibility.  "'Dharma Gaia' is a Sanskrit/Greek neologism coined by Thich Nhat Hanh (as a pun on "Dharmakaya" or the Body of Dharma). It means, roughly, "doing the right thing for the living Earth."

'Gaia' is the ancient Greek name for the Earth Mother Goddess, which has been adopted as a name for the scientific understanding of the Earth as a self-regulatory, complex adaptive system.

The DharmaGaia list is devoted to a discussion of the integration of spiritual practice (in any or all traditions) and the ecological healing of our planet that we must all undertake, in our various ways, in the coming years.

Welcome to the discussion. Please practice mindfulness and compassion toward others in your posts. If anyone flames, or otherwise deliberately insults people, such noxious posts will be weeded out.

May you all be well, do good work, and keep in touch. (With gratitude to Garrison Keillor, to whom I owe that wonderful mantra)."
  • Dharma Gaia Satyagraha.  ""Nonviolent noncooperation with evil is a sacred duty." --M.K. Gandhi

This list derives from three words which have become my guiding lights in these darkening days of mindless war and Orwellian newspeak:

DHARMA--the eternal Truth, as manifested in every wisdom tradition on Earth, simultaneously as principle, precept and practice.

GAIA--the living Earth, understood as a self-organizing, complex adaptive system in which humanity is seen as a part of, rather than apart from, the natural world. The only living planet we will ever know, currently threatened by GLOMART, the Global Market Economy, which runs on a logic of maximization based on arithmetic (money): "More is always better; you are what you own; and the bottom line is the bottom line." Glomart is a cancerous outgrowth of western civilization, now global in scope, which is now consuming Gaia.

SATYAGRAHA--lit. "Firmly grasping the Truth." Mahatma Gandhi's luminous term for his political strategy of mindfully Speaking Truth to Power, and Nonviolent Noncooperation with Evil; a sacred tradition initiated by Lao Tzu, the Buddha, and the Hebrew Prophets, perfected by Jesus, and practiced by St. Francis, Guru Nanak, Thoreau, Gandhi, King, Mandela, Thich Nhat Hanh, the Dalai Lama, and Anh Saung Soo Kyi

So a short form of Dharma Gaia Satyagraha may be expressed by the following couplet:

    "Do the right thing for the living Earth;
Grasp the Truth for all its worth."

The purpose of this list, then, is to open up a discussion of effective ways of simultaneously (1) transforming Glomart and thereby healing Gaia, and (2) practicing Satyagraha against the Bush regime and other toxic manifestations of Glomart."  Yahoo! group.
  • Divine-Meditation · Divinemeditation.  "Paramahamsa Nityananda Swamiji is only 28 yr old from India . He is a enlightened person whose mission is two-fold: to heal the sick, and guide seekers to experience Ananda or Bliss through meditation. He says, “Meditation is a complement to medication”.

According to Swamiji, “Enlightenment is the result of tapas – the single-minded pursuit of Truth, where in you lose yourself in the Self. Individual consciousness disappears into the Universal Consciousness and you become THAT. It is the no-mind experience. Out of this, Ecstasy and Energy are born."  Yahoo! group.

  • FiveMindfulnessTrainings · 5 Mindfulness Trainings -Thich Nhat Hanh.  ""The five wonderful precepts are love itself." (Thich Nhat Hanh)

    Hi :) Welcome:)

The purpose of this sangha is "to water the mind of love in this beautiful garden of practice" (Thich Nhat Hanh) by sharing and supporting one another in our application of the Five Mindfulness Trainings.

The Five Minfulness Trainings are Thich Nhat Hanh's teaching of the precepts and discussed in his book "For a Future to Be Possible".

The Five Mindfulness Trainings will be emailed monthly. A gentle reminder.

See 'Files' for the Trainings, Triple Jewel, and other Buddhist teachings.
See 'Links' for Thich Nhat Hanh related sites including his book publishing site.
See 'Photos' for beautiful photos from Deer Park Monastery's website.

My intent is to offer a warm and safe space where we can support one another with Thay's teachings via a monthly email of the 5MT, message boards and chat; to offer support to all on the path - the curious, the beginner and experienced people and everyone in between.

This sangha is intended to supplement our home or root sangha. For those who do not have one, this could be a resource to find other like-minded people in your area or close by to create a small sangha.

That stated, there are times when going to a local sangha is impossible. These reasons can be due to things, such as, RVing, traveling, having odd/strange work hours, illness, disability, no childcare, living in a remote location, and so on. This sangha is here for those times when we need to connect with like-minded people.

May we gently, joyfully and mindfully walk our path.
    Present moment...beautiful moment."  Yahoo! group.

  • Mantra_meditation · Raja Yoga: Mantras, Chakras & Breath.  "The spiritual practice which combines working with mantras, chakras, and yogic breathing techniques is known as "raja yoga".

Sanskrit mantras are energy-based, rather than meaning-based, sounds and spiritual formulas that directly affect our subtle energy system, called the "chakras". Used over an extended period of time mantras, combined with chakra and breath techniques, quiet the mind, create a sense of inner peace, improve health, and create positive karma.

One doesn't have to subscribe to the Hindu religion in order to use and benefit from these techniques. Practitioners come from diverse spiritual paths, including Judaism, Christianity, Buddhism and others. Working with mantras, chakras, and yogic breathing enrich all spiritual traditions. We invite you to join us in the ancient practice of "raja yoga".

  • Mindfulness Practising Group of Brisbane.  "This group is an outgrowth of the Mindfulness Practising Group And Freedom Sangha located in Brisbane.
Thich Nhat Hanh teaches that a community of friends (sangha) is an essential ingredient in the practice of mindfulness. If we allow ourselves to be in a good sangha, transformation will come naturally as our spiritual practice grows in a supportive atmosphere of mutual development.
Our main concern is therefore to build a happy sangha - taking care of each person, looking into his pain, her difficulties, his aspirations, her fear, his hopes in order to make everyone comfortable and happy.
When we see a sangha whose practice reveals peace, calm, and happiness, confidence is born in us right away.
This e-group sangha seeks to water the seeds of peace, joy and loving kindness in all of us by keeping in touch and supporting each other outside of our meetings, by sharing the fruits of our practice and our lives, by advising of social get-togethers and fun activities, and by organizing participation in community social action programs."  Yahoo! group.

  • Ottawa Christian Meditation.  "In a world that is growing increasingly aware of its need for stability and depth, the way of Christian Meditation is speaking to more and more people with the authenticity of a path that is both rooted in Christian tradition and experience, and available to contemporary men and women. It is a path beyond thought and imagination into the presence of the risen Lord who dwells in our hearts. The way is one of simplicity and discipline. Down through the centuries people have sought teachers to inspire them and communities of fellow pilgrims with whom to journey. The foundation of Christian Meditation has been inspired by the work of such a teacher. Dom John Main (1926-1982) first encountered the universal tradition of meditation in the East. He became a Benedictine monk at Ealing Abbey in London, and rediscovered the same tradition as part of the teaching of the early Desert Fathers, thus taking this tradition of prayer back to the roots of Christianity.

Later John Main founded a contemplative monastery in Montreal. It was there that the seeds were sown for a worldwide family of mediators. He died there in 1982. Dom Laurence Freeman OSB who studied and worked with John Main continues to lead this teaching of meditation around the world.

  • Yoga and Meditation.  "To live in God, to commune with God, is Yoga. Life in God brings eternal bliss. Yoga shows you the way. Yoga unites you with God. Yoga makes you immortal.

Yoga is complete life. It is a method which overhauls all the sides of the human personality. Yoga is a system of integral education, education not only of the body and the mind or the intellect, but also of the inner spirit.

Yoga shows you the marvelous method of rising from goodness to godliness, and then to eternal divine splendor. Yoga is the art of right living. The Yogi who has learnt the art of right living is happy, harmonious, and peaceful. He is free from tension.

Yoga is a science perfected by ancient seers of India, not of India merely but of humanity as a whole. It is an exact science. It is a perfect, practical system of self-culture."  Yahoo! group.
  • Yogic Science for Meditation.  "The purpose of Yogic disciplines has been described in a great variety of ways: as the discovery of truth, as the realization of the self, as the realization of the identity of Brahman and atman, as the unification of man and god. Yoga is a means of achieving union with the. inner true self, the god within.

The Sanskrit word "YOGA" has two meanings the first of these, "UNION", implies harmony, unity, and stability. The second meaning, "YOKE" (as used to link oxen drawing a wagon) signifies the unification of the individual self with divine. This unification is possible through concentration upon scared symbol or entity such as a chakra, Mandela or mantra, or simply upon the inner true self.  The ultimate goal of yoga-can eventually be realized."
  • Zenpractice · Ch'an and Zen Practice.  "Ch'an is the name first given to the meditation which is typical of the practice and state of mind which was carried from India to China by the First Ancestor, or Patriarch, of Ch'an and Zen, Bodhidharma. He came from "the West", from India, to China. Later, Ch'an migrated to Japan, as did almost everything Chinese. In Japan, Ch'an is pronounced, and known as, "Zen". Fortunately (and we must thank our good karma for this), Ch'an and Zen teachers have come to the West, and have taught in the West and trained Western teachers, by now. We are the first or second or third generation of Ch'an and Zen practitioners in the West, and we bear a large responsibility to insure that the Dharma is never lost. "This is the most important thing in the world", says Robert Aitken Roshi. May we all experience strong practice, and continue to pass along any pointers, or turning-words and phrases which arise in us. General discussion is encouraged. Post here when you will, and please practice general civility. Take good care of yourselves."  Yahoo! group.
