From Peter Stanley "I found out I was HIV positive in 1985, during the early
years of the AIDS crisis, before there were any treatments to fight AIDS. Talk
about scary. I was probably infected by the HIV virus a few years before that,
and was already having symptoms of a weakened immune system. My T4 cells had
fallen to around 350, and I had swollen lymph nodes. I didn't know what my
viral load was - the quantity of AIDS virus in my blood - because there were
no tests measuring HIV levels back then.
Fortunately, AZT was approved in 1987, and from then on, a steady flow of HIV
and AIDS treatments have been researched and approved. Today there are 20
drugs for the treatment of HIV and AIDS, and more are in the research
pipeline. But talk about confusing - the HIV virus is one of the most
complicated to treat, and many people don't even bother trying to learn about
their options. That's where this website comes in handy."
Multimedia
HIV Positive.
Warning, this Web site has annoying pop-up windows that will continue to make
noise while you are watching their videos. Additionally, because the Web
site has frames it is not possible to provide you links directly to the
videos. The Web site must be reached through their home page and then
you must click on the video library option. The videos appear squished,
but the information is valuable enough to overlook the Web site's problems.
AIDS101.COM. "AIDS 101 was
launched in October, 1999 by Antonella Pisani. With the support of Web sites
throughout the world, the site has grown at a steady pace since its inception.
This site was created to help spread information about a ravaging disease, and
to serve as a community for friends of people who are living with, or have
passed away from HIV/AIDS.
This site was inspired by a young man named Joey DiPaolo, who matched an
innocent face with a ravaging disease."
