News

Organizations

  • Prostate Cancer Research Institute (PCRI).  "The Prostate Cancer Research Institute (PCRI) was founded in 1996 by medical oncologists Stephen B. Strum and Mark C. Scholz, with support from the Daniel Freeman Hospital Foundation in Southern California. Dr. Strum and Dr. Scholz are internationally recognized prostate cancer specialists.

The objective of PCRI is to educate patients and their families about prostate cancer. This includes new advances in diagnosis, staging, treatments and available resources. PCRI believes that a patient who understands his disease and treatment is empowered to communicate more effectively with his physicians and obtain a better outcome. PCRI intends to use all available communication tools to accomplish this most important objective."
  • Robert Benjamin Ablin Foundation for Cancer Research.  "Our principal endeavors are directed toward improvement and development of methods for the detection, diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer and the communication of this information. To this end, one goal is to educate men to take a new blood test which measures levels of 'prostate-specific antigen' (PSA), a protein present at higher levels in men with prostate cancer and other diseases of the prostate."
  • Us TOO.  "Us TOO is a not-for-profit organization providing information, counseling and educational meetings to assist men with prostate disease (and their spouses / partners) in making decisions about their treatment with confidence and support.
Us TOO was started by prostate cancer survivors in 1990 and continues to be governed by prostate cancer survivors for prostate cancer patients and survivors (and their spouses / partners and family).

Us TOO chapter meetings are free and open to newly diagnosed patients, patients currently in their treatment regimen, survivors, family members, friends and healthcare professionals interested in prostate disease.

If you need support or just someone to talk to about your prostate cancer, Us TOO is available for you. If you do not need us but would like to help, we welcome your support and encouragement to others who are in need."

Physicians

  • Prostate Oncology Specialists.  "Prostate Oncology Specialists is a medical group exclusively devoted to caring for men with prostate cancer. We have vast experience diagnosing and treating prostate cancer because 100% of our time is focused on managing men with this disease. Our physicians are board certified in both medical oncology and internal medicine and have made significant contributions to the scientific advancement in this field. We are not urologists (surgeons) who may have a bias toward doing surgery. We are not radiation oncologists who may have a built-in preference for radiation. This is not to say that we never recommend surgery or radiation to our patients. But when surgery or radiation is best we refer our patients to the most highly skilled experts for treatment.

Our approach is first careful staging of the disease to determine the risk of spread outside of the capsule of the prostate gland. The staging process may include special scans of the prostate such as a spectrographic endorectal MRI or color doppler ultrasound to better delineate the size and location of the cancer within the gland. Proper and complete staging is the first step toward estimating the risk of the cancer spread outside the gland. Our next step is counseling and educating our patients about this risk of spread and how to best counteract it. Lastly, once a treatment plan has been selected, our doctors are skillful at implementing a successful plan that minimizes the risk of toxic side effects
