  • AAQI The Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative.  "The Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative (AAQI) is a grassroots effort to raise awareness and fund research through art. It has two components:

    1. "Alzheimer's: Forgetting Piece by Piece," a traveling art quilt exhibit interpreting Alzheimer's in fiber art that will tour the US for three years.

    2. "Priority: Alzheimer's Quilts," an on-going sale/auction of small art quilts, so named for the urgent need for funding to find a cure, and for the method which the quilts are shipped to their new owners: in a flat USPS priority mailer. (The quilts are no larger than 9" x 12".)

ALL PROFIT WILL BE DONATED TO ALZHEIMER'S RESEARCH.

This group is for individuals who want to:

-Be informed of AAQI's progress
-Help publicize the work of the Initiative
-Carry out the work of the Initiative
-Become advocates in the battle against Alzheimer's disease

It is a newsletter. You may reply to the author (Ami Simms, founder of the Art Quilt Initiative) but you may not post to the group.

  • AlzheimersDisease Alzheimers Disease.  "Alzheimer's Disease What is Alzheimer's?
Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia in older people. A dementia is a medical condition that disrupts the way the brain works. AD affects the parts of the brain that control thought, memory, and language. Although the risk of getting the disease increases with age, it is not a normal part of aging. At present the cause of the disease is unknown and there is no cure.

AD is named after Dr. Alois Alzheimer, a German psychiatrist. In 1906, Dr. Alzheimer described changes in the brain tissue of a woman who had died of an unusual mental illness. He found abnormal deposits (now called senile or neuritic plaques) and tangled bundles of nerve fibers (now called neurofibrillary tangles). These plaques and tangles in the brain have come to be characteristic brain changes due to AD.

  • Alzheimers_disease_support Alzheimer's Disease Support Group.  "This group was created by me. I lost my grandpa to Alzheimer's disease on September 25, 2004. The past few months have been really hard. I have been wanting to start a group for support, but never have done it before. I just want to be educated and also to help others become educated about this heartbreaking disease that seems to take the ones we are closest too away.  I know that the whole memory loss and dementia are very hard to deal with. That is why we all need to be educated, and hopefully a cure will come soon. Please feel free to join this group. We all can learn about this together. No matter if you are someone who has lost a loved one, or someone who is dealing with all of this now, it doesn't matter. Just come and join, and we can do this together....."

  • Best-Friends-Alzheimers-Disease Best Friends - Alzheimer's Disease.  "Perhaps the most profound and shared impact Alzheimer's disease has upon individuals living with the diagnosis, and their families and friends is what it does to life long relationships. Kids take care of parents, dads end up taking care of moms, ways of relating to each other of depending on each other, of loving each other are scrambled and sometimes lost. Some turn into parents of their own parents, others turn into children of their own children. We all become angry and fearful; of the disease, of each other, and our selves.

This site provides a sheltered place for those of us in the midst of this turmoil to vent, to cry, to search, to support, and to begin to redefine ourselves and our loved ones in ways which factor in the impact of the disease. Share the good and the bad. Ask for information. Let that part of yourself which is best understood by those walking down the same disease path as you outside of yourself.

Keeping feelings inside is never the best long range solution to stree. We aren't doctors or professionals. We are fellow travelers. Take from us what seems best for you and leave part of the best of yourself for others to take with them.

This is a great group to make new best friends who fit into the new life imposed on you by this terrible disease.
  • Caregivers-Army-Admin.  "CAREGIVERS ARMY is uniting to create an ARMY that will speak as one voice to the bureaucracies that hamper our efforts to assist our loved ones. This group is also very supportive in dealing with many diversified caregiver issues.

    The Mission

Aware of the fact that Alzheimer's Disease is considered by the epidemiologists as the disease of the century and that it is a growing problem with now over four million sufferers in this country and as many as 19 million people who have a patient in the family needing care, we feel the need to do something about it.

    We will:

    1. Work to increase public awareness of the problem Alzheimer's poses to the country, and to enlist their help in removing the problem.

    2. Educate every one about the disease so that all can be of real help to patient and caregiver.

    3. Petition the government for more money for research to find a cure. We will collect signatures to take to Washington, each year prior to the budget building, until a cure is found.

    4. Propose and support legislation to be helpful to patients and caregivers such as Medicare coverage of Alzheimer's in it's later stages and some support for caring for patients at home.
